Keighley 1st XI off to a flyer at Yeadon.

Keighley got their season off to a dream start against a very strong Yeadon team. Richard Robinson was in majestic, commanding form and he gave a chanceless innings of 118 not out, carrying his bat through the innings. Robinson was well supported by Andy Waggett (30), Johnny Wikinson (25) and debutant Amjid Hussain (36). Hussain, another product of the Keighley junior system, showed what an exciting talent he is by blasting the Yeadon bowling to all parts of the ground, providing an exhilarating, attacking finale to the Keighley innings.

The wicket was firm and, despite being a little slow was playing true and the Keighley attack would have to bowl well to restrict Yeadon’s line up. Joe Stead, another young player making his debut, was the pick of the seam bowlers and he was unlucky to only come away with two wickets. Stead showed a maturity beyond his years, bowling with pace, swing and accuracy to cause the Yeadon batsman problems throughout.

Robinson was again heavily involved in the game. His flight, guile and nagging consistency brought him 5 wickets, well supported by good catching from the Keighley fielders. Johnny Wilkinson, another Under 17 player, picked up 6 victims including a spectacular one handed diving catch and two sharp stumpings.Skipper Ross Towler picking up a well deserved 3 wickets.

In a long, tough and competitive season of cricket, Keighley were very happy to launch the campaign with a maximum 20 points.

Richard Robinson underlined his status as one of the finest players in the history of the Bradford League with an all round performance of the very highest quality. As Robinson himself admitted after the game, just as pleasing as the result was the continued emergence of such promising local cricketing talent. This Saturday sees Keighley entertain Brighouse at Lawkholme Lane.

Keighley Cricket Club enjoy bumper awards evening

Keighley Cricket Club was delighted and humbled to receive the Albert Smith Spirit of Cricket Award at the Bradford League Annual Dinner. The event, which took place at the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford, had former England batsman Derek Randall as the guest speaker.

The prestigious award came in recognition of the marks received by umpires for sportsmanship in both the first and second teams. The club rightfully place great significance to the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ ethos, and this is promoted throughout the club in all the senior teams and junior section. As part of the ‘Chance to Shine’ initiative, working in local schools, Keighley Cricket Club coaches also deliver the Spirit of Cricket message to hundreds of young cricketers across the town.

The presentation evening was also a successful event for a number of the Keighley players on a personal level. Matthew Bottomley received the Pennine Trophy for the highest individual score in the league. Supporters of the Lawkholme Lane side will vividly remember his sparkling 166 against Idle on a glorious May afternoon this year. Matthew also shared the John Heaton Memorial Trophy with Andrew Waggett, in recognition of the highest opening partnership. Their mammoth 211 runs for the first wicket also came in the game against Idle. The two Keighley openers now find themselves in the illustrious company of Test and county cricketers to have also won the trophy, including Indian cricket legend VVS Laxman.

The A Leslie Mollett Trophy was awarded to Alex Towler for the second team fielding. Anyone who has seen Alex field would surely agree he is one of the most tenacious, committed and athletic out fielders to have graced Keighley Cricket Club for some time.

After an excellent season with the bat and behind the stumps, talented young wicket keeper Callum Jones collected the David Bairstow Golden Gloves Trophy. Callum shared the award with Shahban Raheem (Yeadon) for the most victims in a match (six).
